Hello everyone! My name is now Tsuki, and it means Moon in Japanese. I am named for the upcoming eclipse on April 8, 2024. I am an approximately 3-year-old female, Shiba Inu, who was picked up as a stray in southern VA. I waited in the shelter until DC SIR found a foster home for me. I was able to go to a temporary foster home while at the shelter, but I didn’t do well with the resident cats, so I had to go back to the shelter. While there, I stayed in a kennel with several other dogs. I am a tiny Shiba Inu at just 18lbs. I may not do well with cats, but I have done really well with other dogs. DC SIR and the shelter had a few volunteers transport me to Shiba HQ. I sat in the front seat without a collar or harness because I was much smaller than the volunteer expected, so my harness was too big. I am a perfect pawsenger. When I arrived at Shiba HQ, it was pouring rain, so I had my dog introductions inside. I did great with everyone immediately. I even ignored the resident cat, but he grew up with Shibas and didn’t act scared of me. I ate a yummy raw meal and took treats from my foster mom. When I went outside to potty in the fenced backyard, my run instincts kicked in. Usually, I would get a bath before heading to my new foster home, but the volunteer at DC SIR couldn’t catch me for an hour, so my new foster pawrents will be tasked with the bath! Obviously, I am a runner since I was found as a stray. I should have been on a long leash! When I was brought back into the house, I chose to take a nap on the couch. I was obviously an indoor Shiba at one time. I am fully vetted, spayed, and ready for adoption after my 2-week assessment. I am learning leash manners with my foster family. DC SIR thinks I will be a very popular Shiba! You can apply to adopt me soon!![]()

Hello everyone, my name is now Rosie. I am a senior Shiba Inu who has had a very difficult couple of months. You see, my human passed away in our home, and no one knew for some time. I had to survive, not knowing if anyone would ever come for me. Eventually, my owner's body was found, and Animal Control took me in. My extended family tried to keep me for a few days, but I can be a bit snappy with people I don't know. DC SIR knew they would have to take me but couldn't find any foster homes that fit my needs during the holidays. I even got to live in a foster home with the Shelter program, but they didn't think I was a good fit either. Thankfully, a volunteer at DC SIR had space to keep me separated from other resident pets. When the DC SIR Volunteer picked me up I was put into a crate for transport. I don't like crates and let everyone know. When my foster dad picked me up at the transfer location, I snapped and snarled. Luckily, my new foster dad didn't have a crate and allowed me to lean on him and cuddle on his lap on part of the drive. But that's about as much affection as I plan to give him for some time! I wasn't sure about my foster parents, but they have worked with fearful and reactive dogs, so they know how to build and gain my trust. I go in and out to their backyard to potty without issue. I loved all the yummy raw food my foster parents gave me. I also gently took treats from them, but I was still nervous and growled if I thought they might get too close. My foster parents see that I am a sweet girl who needs savvy adopters who will take the time to earn my trust so that I can feel safe to be me. I may not be a bug cuddler, but I can bring happiness to a family that will take the time to give me a loving home. ![]()
